Abstract

Sinoe the appearance in 1937 of the Eourth Edition of the International Directory of the Co-operative Press, the Co-operative Movement has become active in many parts of the world virhere it had hardly penetrated before. For this' reason, and in order that the new edition may give as obmplete a picture as possible of the Co-operative Bress today, all journals about which it has been possible to obtain any reliable information have been recorded regardless of v/hether. or not the isstiing Organisations are affiliated to the International O0“0porative Alliance, Certain countries are conspicuous by their absencej from these, despite repeated enquiries, no reply to the I.C.A. questionnaire has been received. The Fourth Edition contained particxxlars of 726 jovtmals in 31 countries. In the present edition the number of journals is no more them 274> although these are now spread over A4 countries. It has been possible to obtain cir culation figures for only about a third of the journals listed, but their total circulation amoTonts to about 6-^ million as against 9i million for the much larger number of journals published in 1937. As there are certainly many joiirnals of whose existence the Alliance is unfortxmately unaware, it was decidod not to print this Fifth Edition of the Directory, as was originally intended, but to issue it in a stencilled, loose loaf form. This will enable supplementary pages to be circulated from time to time as information concerning additional journals is received, and it is hoped that editors -will send the desired information to the Alliance. For this purpose a copy of the questionnaire which was circulated is included in the Appendix to indicate the particulars required. It will be noted that each coimtry has been given a number and each jOTomal a letter, both number and letter corresponding to data given in the appendix concerning the type of articles in which the paper is interested; reproduction pemdssion and fees; translations and illustrations. This information, which was not given in former editions of the Press Directory, has been included in accordance vidth requests from co-operative editors. Finally, the thanks of the Alliance are due to all the Editors and officers of the affiliated and other Organisations, who have kindly supplied information. The help received from "Oooperativas",the publication of the Pan-American Union, from which the names of a large number of Latin American Co-operative journals were obtained is also gratefully acknowledged, although regrettably little supplementary information could be obtained by direct enquiry
